Wild Blue Skies WILD Letters and Mission Medals

Four letters per stage, Donkey Kong-style hides, and why they are not ribbons

Wild Blue Skies WILD Letters Guide

Launch reviews finally settled a question the demo only hinted at. In Wild Blue Skies, medals and ribbons are two different tracks. A medal comes from collecting the four letters W, I, L, and D during a mission. A ribbon comes from posting a high score. Steam’s W-I-L-D achievement — “Obtain a medal by collecting W-I-L-D during a mission” — is the first-party confirmation. IGN, Gamers Heroes, WayTooManyGames, and Checkpoint all describe the same split after August 13, 2026.

This page is the letter hunt. For chain math and debrief bonuses, use the Score System. For gold habits that are not letters, use the Medal Guide. For a tick list, use the Medal Checklist.

What the letters actually do

Think of WILD as a Donkey Kong Country KONG homage dropped into a rail shooter. Four letters spawn per mission. Reviews say they sit in the open, inside crates, or inside enemies. Collecting the full set awards that stage’s medal. Collecting them also feeds a score bonus on the debrief when you grab all four in one run — IGN lists “finding all the letters” alongside squad survival, full health, and a fast boss as ribbon-adjacent bonuses. That means a letter run can help a ribbon, but a ribbon run can still miss a letter tucked in a crate you never shot.

Decorated wants medals on every mission. Distinguished wants ribbons on every mission. Ace Pilot wants both. Do not grind Ace Pilot until you can separate the two goals in your head. The Steam percentages at launch already show letters (about a third of players) coming easier than full-catalog medals (about one percent).

Where to look without a fake map

We will not publish invented crate coordinates. Those go stale the moment a patch moves a spawn, and they punish first-time players with spoilers they did not ask for. Habits that match every launch review:

  • Shoot crates. Gamers Heroes’ line is the whole strategy: leave no crate unblasted. Bombs help when a cluster sits off the comfortable centerline.
  • Finish wounded enemies. Letters can pop from hulls. Do not leave a smoking fighter because you already “won” the wave.
  • Check branches. A letter on the hard path does not help a medal if you never took the split. See Secret Paths and Branching Paths.
  • Replay with a notepad. IGN’s critique is fair: once you know the four spots, the hunt becomes memorization. That is also why medals exist. Write W-I-L-D checkboxes per named mission.
  • Do not confuse letters with score pickups. Bright tokens that only feed the chain are not letters. Letters spell, then vanish from the HUD as collected.

Cave stages such as Grotto hide letters in collision-heavy geometry. Ocean and Archipelago hides sit in wide sightlines you skip if you hug the center. Mines and Temple hide them behind timer or Walker pressure — grab letters on a dedicated replay, not during the Prowler rush unless you are already comfortable.

Medals versus ribbons versus achievements

RewardHow you earn itTypical conflict
MedalAll four WILD letters in that missionExploring off-rail can cost health and lives
RibbonHigh score on that missionNeeds chains, charge combos, bonuses
Score bonusesLetters complete, squad alive, full health, fast bossPacifist or Friendly Fire runs fight these
Decorated / Distinguished / Ace PilotAll missions, medals and/or ribbonsRequires a catalog, not a lucky Hurricane

IGN notes that losing blaster upgrades can lock you out of the damage needed for ribbons even if you still know every letter. Keep lives for letter hunts; spend them later on ribbon retries. The game lets you restart a mission — use that instead of limping a broken loadout into a medal you will fail anyway.

Stage-by-stage letter mindset

  • Jill’s Training — learn crate silhouettes here so later caves are readable.
  • Hurricane (demo) — rain plus score trophy. Do a survival pass, then a letter pass, then a ribbon pass.
  • Canyons / Grotto — geology trophies already ask you to shoot everything. Letters often ride that same aggression.
  • Cloudtop — do not tunnel-vision the Cloudworm and miss a crate under the camera.
  • Grimclaw / Ash Cloud — finale letters are easy to skip while watching cutscene brain. Stay greedy until the debrief.

Charge shots open stubborn crates without dumping your only bomb; read Charge Shots. Wingmen calling a side vector may be pointing at a letter cave — Wingman Calls. If you only care about the Steam popup, the W-I-L-D trophy unlocks on the first full set; 100% still needs Decorated.

Wild Blue Skies hides its name in the sky four letters at a time. Shoot the boxes, finish the fighters, and keep medal homework off your ribbon runs until both muscles are warm.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers from launch-day stores, reviews, and in-game systems.

How do you get medals in Wild Blue Skies?

Collect the four letters W, I, L, and D in a mission. They appear in the open, in crates, or inside enemies. That medal is separate from ribbons, which come from high scores.

Do WILD letters help your score?

Yes. Launch reviews list a debrief bonus for finding all four letters, alongside squad survival, full health, and a fast boss. You can still miss a ribbon if the rest of the score is low.

Is there a WILD achievement?

Yes. Steam and Xbox include W-I-L-D: obtain a medal by collecting the letters during a mission. Decorated asks for medals on every mission.
